How Are Diamonds Valued?
Diamonds are graded on what the trade calls the 4Cs. In plain English:
- Cut — how well the stone has been shaped to reflect light. A well-cut diamond sparkles; a poorly cut one looks dull, even if everything else is perfect.
- Colour — diamonds are graded from D (completely colourless) down through the alphabet as they pick up a faint yellow or brown tint. The closer to colourless, the more valuable.
- Clarity — almost every diamond has tiny natural marks inside. The fewer and smaller they are, the higher the clarity grade.
- Carat — simply the weight of the stone. One carat is 0.2 grams. Bigger stones are rarer, so price per carat rises sharply with size.
All four matter. A large stone with poor colour and clarity can be worth less than a smaller, cleaner one.
