Sell Diamonds in St Helens

Selling a diamond isn't quite the same as selling gold. Gold has a clear daily price per gram — diamonds don't. Each stone is judged on its own merits, and a lot of people are surprised by what their diamond is actually worth on the resale market. We'll always be straight with you about that, and the valuation is free with no pressure to sell. Based inside Cash Generator St Helens town centre. Bring a quote from another buyer — we're happy to review it and aim to beat genuine local offers.

How Are Diamonds Valued?

Diamonds are graded on what the trade calls the 4Cs. In plain English:

  • Cut — how well the stone has been shaped to reflect light. A well-cut diamond sparkles; a poorly cut one looks dull, even if everything else is perfect.
  • Colour — diamonds are graded from D (completely colourless) down through the alphabet as they pick up a faint yellow or brown tint. The closer to colourless, the more valuable.
  • Clarity — almost every diamond has tiny natural marks inside. The fewer and smaller they are, the higher the clarity grade.
  • Carat — simply the weight of the stone. One carat is 0.2 grams. Bigger stones are rarer, so price per carat rises sharply with size.

All four matter. A large stone with poor colour and clarity can be worth less than a smaller, cleaner one.

Why Diamond Resale Prices Are Lower Than Retail

This is the part most people don't hear from jewellers, so it's worth being honest up front: the resale value of a diamond is almost always significantly less than what was paid for it new.

  • Retail markups are high — high-street jewellers carry rent, staff, marketing and stock costs that are all built into the ticket price.
  • Diamonds don't resell at retail prices — buying a diamond is a bit like driving a new car off the forecourt. The "second-hand" market simply doesn't pay retail.
  • Market demand varies — certain shapes, sizes and qualities are easier to move on than others, and that affects what we can offer.
  • Lab-grown diamonds — the rise of lab-grown stones has put downward pressure on the resale value of natural diamonds, especially in smaller sizes.

None of this means your diamond is worthless — it just means the figure won't match the original receipt. We'd rather tell you that on the counter than dress it up.

What Diamonds Can You Sell?

  • Diamond rings (dress rings, eternity bands, cluster rings)
  • Engagement rings — solitaires, halos, three-stone designs
  • Loose diamonds, with or without paperwork
  • Diamond jewellery — bracelets, earrings, pendants, tennis chains

Jewellery Value vs Stone Value

Not every diamond piece is valued the same way. Broadly there are three types:

  • Stone-led — a solitaire engagement ring, for example, where most of the value sits in the diamond itself.
  • Gold-led — heavy gold pieces with small accent diamonds, where the value is mostly in the metal.
  • Combined — items where both the gold weight and the stones contribute meaningfully.

We assess every piece individually. Sometimes the best offer comes from the gold side, sometimes from the stone, and sometimes both. We'll explain which is which before quoting. If you'd like to understand the gold side in more detail, our guides to how much your gold is worth in the UK and the gold valuation in St Helens walk through it step by step.

Certified vs Non-Certified Diamonds

A certificate from a recognised lab — most commonly GIA or IGI — gives an independent grading of the 4Cs. It removes a lot of the guesswork and tends to give buyers more confidence, which can support the offer.

If your diamond doesn't have paperwork, that's not a problem. Plenty of older rings were never certified. We assess uncertified stones in store using loupes and proper testing equipment. Bring whatever paperwork you do have — original receipts, valuations or insurance documents — and we'll factor it in.

Need to know

Frequently asked questions

How much are diamonds worth when selling?+

It depends entirely on the stone — its cut, colour, clarity and carat weight, plus current market demand for that type of diamond. As a guide, expect resale offers to be a fraction of what was paid at retail; that's normal across the industry, not specific to us. The only accurate figure is one based on assessing your actual diamond in person, which we'll do for free.

Can I sell a diamond without a certificate?+

Yes. A GIA or IGI certificate helps and can support a stronger offer, but plenty of diamonds — especially older rings — were never certified. We assess uncertified stones in store using professional equipment and will explain how we've graded it before making an offer.

Do diamonds lose value?+

Most diamonds bought at retail lose a significant portion of their value the moment they leave the shop, simply because the resale market doesn't pay retail prices. Beyond that initial drop, well-cut natural diamonds tend to hold their value reasonably steadily, though the rise of lab-grown stones has put pressure on the lower end of the market.

Where is the best place to sell diamonds in the UK?+

The best place is somewhere local and trusted, where the diamond is assessed in front of you and you can walk away if you're not happy. Posting valuables to online buyers means losing sight of them and accepting whatever offer comes back. In St Helens, you can bring your diamond into our shop on Church Street, see it tested on the counter, and decide on the day.

Took an old engagement ring in expecting the worst. They were honest about resale, explained the stone properly, and gave me a fair offer with no pressure to sell.
