What gold jewellery do we buy?

Rings (engagement, wedding, dress, signet), chains and necklaces, bracelets and bangles, earrings (singles or pairs), pendants, charms, brooches, watch cases — anything made of real gold. We accept all carats and all conditions, including pieces with missing stones. Damaged pieces are valued on weight and purity in exactly the same way, which is why so many people come to us to sell broken gold in St Helens rather than throw it away.

Do you need to remove gemstones first?

No — bring it as it is. We'll deduct the weight of any stones (we don't pay gold prices for stones), but we'll always show you the calculation so it's completely transparent.

Selling unwanted jewellery is easier than you think

Many St Helens locals are sitting on hundreds of pounds worth of gold jewellery they never wear. There's no shame in selling it — turn something that's gathering dust into something more useful. The figure usually comes down to weight and carat against the current UK gold price, and a few minutes with a kitchen scale is enough to work out roughly what your gold is worth before you visit.

Typical pieces customers bring in

A normal week sees old wedding bands, signet rings, chains and pendants, charm bracelets, single earrings, and the occasional inherited collection — brought in by customers from St Helens itself and from nearby towns like Rainhill, Haydock and Newton-le-Willows. Some arrive with one piece they're curious about; others bring a full jewellery box to value in one go. Both are perfectly normal — there's no minimum and no appointment needed, just walk in to our counter inside Cash Generator on Church Street, or take a look at the wider range of items we buy on the St Helens Gold homepage.

What happens when you visit us

You walk in during opening hours and place your jewellery on the counter — perhaps a few rings, an old chain, a single earring without its pair, or pieces inherited and never worn. After a quick ID check, each piece is examined, tested for carat and weighed in front of you as part of a free gold valuation in St Helens. There's a short pause while the values are worked out against the current market rate, then we explain the offer item by item. If you'd like to sell, you choose cash or a same-day bank transfer — if not, you simply pack everything up and take it home.

Real bits across the counter

From our St Helens counter
  • Walked in with a few old gold rings and walked out with cash 15 minutes later. Genuinely the best price I was offered after trying two other places in town.

    Sarah T. · St Helens

  • Friendly, fair and fast. They explained exactly how they weighed and tested everything. Will be back with my mum's old chains.

    Michael D. · Rainford

  • Sold a broken bracelet and a couple of sovereigns. Paid more than I expected and didn't try to mess me about. Highly recommend.

Need to know

Frequently asked questions

What types of gold jewellery do you buy?+

Rings, chains, necklaces, bracelets, bangles, earrings (including singles), pendants, charms, brooches and gold watch cases. All carats from 9ct to 24ct, hallmarked or unmarked, in any condition.

Do you pay extra for designer or branded jewellery?+

For pure scrap, only weight and carat matter. For genuine high-end designer pieces in excellent condition with paperwork, you may get more from a specialist resale buyer — we'll be honest with you if that applies.

Can I sell gold jewellery with stones still set?+

Yes. Bring it as it is. We deduct the stones' weight (we only pay for gold) and show you the calculation in full.

What about gold-plated or costume jewellery?+

Plating is too thin to recover, so plated and costume items usually have no scrap value. We test for free and tell you straight what's worth buying.

How much is gold jewellery worth per gram?+

It depends on the carat and the current market rate. See our UK gold price guide for current indicative per-gram figures.
