Krugerrand vs sovereign — which sells for more?
On a like-for-like gold-content basis, both are 22-carat and both trade close to spot. A 1oz Krugerrand contains 31.10g of pure gold; a full sovereign contains 7.32g — so the Krugerrand will always realise the larger absolute figure simply because it holds more gold. Per gram of fine gold, sovereign and Krugerrand premiums are typically very close, with sovereigns sometimes edging ahead in the UK market thanks to capital-gains-tax-free status (sovereigns are UK legal tender; Krugerrands are not).
Krugerrand FAQs
Why is a Krugerrand orange-tinted?
It's still .9167 fine — 22-carat — but alloyed with copper rather than silver. That copper gives it the famous reddish hue and a slightly harder surface, which is why circulated Krugerrands tend to look better than circulated Maples or Eagles of the same age.
Do you buy fractional Krugerrands?
Yes — 1oz, 1/2oz, 1/4oz and 1/10oz, and the proof versions of all four. Smaller fractionals carry a wider spread to spot, which is true of every refiner and mint, not a markdown specific to us.
What about older 1967 – 1979 issues?
From a value perspective, common-date Krugerrands from the early years trade as bullion regardless of date. Genuinely scarce proof issues in original Rand Refinery cases are a different conversation.
Can I sell a tube of ten?
Absolutely. We weigh and verify each coin in the tube in front of you — quicker than ten separate visits and often the most efficient way to liquidate a holding.
